Nephew of Justinian, Justin II was selected for the succession before his uncle's death. He became mentally ill and had to appoint Tiberius as Caesar in 574 A.D.
Tiberius was raised to rank of Augustus four years later when Justin II condition worsened. He died shortly afterwards. His wife Empress Sophia exercised considerable political influence throughout her husbands reign.
